Although the initial wave of foreclosures was blamed on sub prime loans and adjustable rate mortgage resets, current problems are attributed to increasing unemployment, a lagging economic indicator. The third quarter of 2009 was the worst for foreclosures in US history, with 937,840 homes receiving a foreclosure letter.
“The study finds that Blacks and Latinos were two to nine more likely to have high cost mortgages than whites,” according to WCVI President Antonio Gonzalez. “These predatory banking practices have directly led to the loss of homes.”

Many mortgage applications were based on two premises, that the borrower’s income would keep increasing and that the value of the home would continue to grow. In many cases, neither of these assumptions proved to be sustainable.
